Black and White Rooms That Make the Case for Monochrome
The husband-and-wife team of John and Christine Gachot met at Studio Sofield in New York, then established their own design studio with a mix of residential and high-profile hospitality projects. They bring a cultivated stance to a downtown aesthetic with a respectful and witty eye. Their own townhouse—the former home of architect Paul Rudolph—graced our Summer 2021 A-List issue. The Los Angeles native emerged from the tutelage of Arthur Erickson and Andrée Putman to found his own Parisian firm. Nikki Klugh is the founder and CEO of an award-winning interior design firm, Nikki Klugh Design Group, Inc, who harnesses her belief that "everyone deserves a place of respite" into her designs. Brigette Romanek is an interior designer and the owner of Los Angeles-based Romanek Design Studio, which offers bespoke design, architectural, and project management services to clients. Nicole Gibbons is a well-known interior designer and the founder of Clare Paint, a direct-to-consumer paint company.
"We get our hands dirty. When I went to design events I would be, sometimes, the only black individual in the room, or one of three in a room of 100 attendees. Even when someone did strike up a conversation, there was this curiosity, like ‘What are you doing here? ’ I always felt like I was on an interview when I was in the room, which didn’t make me feel like I was a part of the industry. Twenty years ago, or even 10, I don’t think someone like me would be trusted with multimillion-dollar commercial projects. The more the world sees people of color working and succeeding, the more comfortable and normal it will become. That is not my reality, and I don’t socialize with those people, generally. So those conversations, where a lot of deals are made, are conversations that none of us, or a lot of us, as African American designers, don’t have particular access to. The other undesirable alternative is a kitchen where black is used for cabinets and trims in an overly formal yet not-quite-perfect way.
While organizations like the Black Artists + Designers Guild, founded by ceramist and rug designer Malene Barnett, have boldly addressed the need for more Black representation in the industry, there’s still a great deal of work to do. For Black History Month, we invited a selection of accomplished Black designers to candidly share their experience navigating the industry and how their culture shows up in their work. Amplifying the voices of Black designers, like this group of talented professionals, is not only crucial for Black History Month, but for the success of the industry in the years to come. The sisters are the force behind Hidden Gem, a home design and gift store based in Southhampton, New York, that focuses on handmade pieces individually made both locally and abroad. With a combined passion for the Hamptons and Antigua, the duo has created a style that’s uniquely their own.
She has displayed her expertise in the design of high profile start up spaces like SeatGeek, Sailthru, Codecademy, Venmo, Newscred, Contently, Uncharted Play and Gilt. Founded by Niya Bascom and Anishka Clarke, the firm carries out vacation properties, restaurants, and residences globally including the United States, France, and the Caribbean. AphroChic began in 2007 as the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason, and quickly expanded from an online blog to a firm that does a wide range of work, from product design to interiors and even film. Often incorporating elements from their roots in the Caribbean, Africa, and different regions in the U.S., these leading black designers come from diverse backgrounds that inform their forward-thinking work.
Having launched her career on Wall Street, Charlotte Moss is equally attuned to the principles of classic decorating and the needs of a modern household, as well as inspired by women travelers and explorers who pushed boundaries. Jamaican-born architect Nina Cooke John’s two-decade-old practice focuses on clean lines and muted tones but lately has welcomed pops of color and well-placed antiques. A notable project was the 2021 Obsidian concept house, codesigned with Leyden Lewis and the BAD Guild. Design shop put them on the map, but it’s their work as the go-to firm for West Coast foodies (among them chefs Nancy Silverton and Suzanne Goin) along with product lines, that prove they’re really cooking with gas. A fourth-generation Californian by way of the Bay Area, Nathan Turner wrote the book on the state’s aesthetic, called I Love California.
New York-based husband-and-wife duo, Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason, have run the design firm AphroChic together since 2007. You may recognize Michel from Bravo's Buying It Blind, where he helped couples design their dream homes. He established his practice, SmithBoyd Interiors, in 2006, which specializes in luxury projects, both residential and commercial. Sheila Bridges has been a design industry powerhouse since she launched her practice in the '90s. She's known for her creativity and masterful use of color was once named “America’s Best Interior Designer” by CNN and Time Magazine and is the creator of the Harlem Toile pattern.
Second is the walls that are totally dominated by mirrors and a bright window looking over the bathtub. A black color theme in the dining room area can create a look that is modern and chic, Asian, or traditionally themed. Leyden Lewis is not only an interior designer with a singular aesthetic, he’s also a fine artist. She founded her company, Sheila Bridges Design, Inc, in the historical city and hasn't looked back. Bridges has been named Designer of the Year by prestigious media houses, including Time Magazine and CNN. She also counts notable figures such as former president Bill Clinton, current Vice President Kamala Harris, and Ivy League institutions, including Princeton and Columbia Universities, as her clients. Bridges' work is a versatile and exciting exploration of timeless designs and expert craftsmanship.
